The feminine powers
within us are
represented by the
Moon, and I know no
greater tribute to offer
masculine striving than
the recognition of the
forces of the Moon that
must be present for
masculine Solar
energies to have been
used so well.
Winners of the 2004 Governor General's Literary Awards
Lt.-Gen. Roméo Dallaire, Quebec City,
for Shake Hands with the Devil: The Failure of Humanity in Rwanda
(Random House Canada; distributed by Random House of Canada)
(ISBN 0-679-31171-8, bound / ISBN 0-679-31172-6, paper)
An essential book that, in speaking of the Rwandan tragedy, points to some of our
greatest failings as a civilized society. Out of his own experience, Roméo Dallaire has
written a brave cautionary tale for our hard and selfish times.
Born in Holland in 1946, Roméo Dallaire served for 35 years with the Canadian Forces.
The best-selling Shake Hands With the Devil, about his experience as the Force
Commander of the United Nations Mission to Rwanda in 1993-94, exposes the failure to
stop one of the worst genocides of the 20th century.
After his return from Rwanda, he served as Deputy-Commander of the Canadian Army
and Assistant Deputy Minister of National Defence. He lectures widely on matters relating
to post-traumatic stress disorder, war-affected children and control of small arms
distribution.
Lt.-Gen. (ret.) Dallaire was awarded the Meritorious Service Cross and is the winner of
the first Aegis Award for Genocide Prevention. He lives in Quebec City.
